Liquid format for Semantic Kernel Prompts -Part 1

This article will focus only defining the pieces of the Liquid Prompt template and how different components fit in context with the example in an earlier article.
My earlier article focused on generating vector embeddings and how Semantic Kernel can be used to perform similarity search. The output results though accurate were pretty underwhelming as the results were limited to return the description of the hotel coming from the dataset that was queried for through the LLM.
Liquid is a straightforward templating language developed by Shopify primarily used for generating HTML but it can also create other text formats and templates. Using Liquid templates we can dynamically insert prompt outputs similar to placeholders in MS Word, but with added support for logic such as loops and conditions.
Consider the following data

If the user prompt is : "I am looking for a hotel that is close to the beach"
the output is : "Beachfront resort with ocean view rooms and seafood restaurant."
Although technically correct, the response lacks context and does not fully utilize the available metadata such as the hotel name, tags, or any structured formatting that could make the answer more useful and user-friendly.
If we need the response to be more expressive for instance, including the hotel name, highlighting why it matches the userβs query, or presenting the information in a structured format we need a way to control how the retrieved data is passed to and rendered by the LLM.
This is where Liquid templates in Semantic Kernel become particularly useful. By leveraging Liquid templating we can shape the prompt and the final response ensuring that the LLM produces richer, user friendly and well-structured outputs instead of returning raw descriptions.
For example, instead of returning just the description, we can format the response like:

Why it matches: Located on the beachfront
Features: Ocean view rooms, seafood restaurant
To make responses more meaningful and user-friendly, we need better control over how data is passed to the LLM and how the final output is structured. This is where Liquid templates in Semantic Kernel come into play.
To get started we first will have to define a liquid prompt template.
Below is an example of a YAML-based Liquid template used in Semantic Kernel:

Prevents LLM from inventing hotels and forces deterministic behavior
Reponses should be limited only to the provided data.

The LLM now understands in context with hotel. This removes ambiguity :

name,descriptionandtags
Also we have defensive prompt pattern to prevent prompt injection attacks. It explicitly states that treat everything under the <data> tags as data and any instructions sent should be ignored.
Note : That the above settings reduces risk but does NOT fully prevent prompt injection. LLMs are probabilistic, not rule-based and clever injections can still bypass this.

- Iterates through conversation messages and injects them into the prompt
Now you might ask as why is there a need to iterate through the user input ?
This is because though the user provides a single query, SK internally represents it as a collection of messages to support conversations. This is why an iteration is required to extract and render the input correctly in Liquid templates.

This part defines what inputs your Semantic Kernel prompt expects and how they are described. These variables will be part of the kernel arguments that would be sent through the prompt and work as function parameters but in this case it works for prompt template.
Conclusion
In this article we focused on how to structure liquid templates to provide context-aware and interactive prompt responses along with understanding of different components of a liquid template.
We saw by example how input variables such as hotel and userinput enables dynamic injection of this data into prompts. By leveraging loops and structured formatting, we can guide the LLM to generate responses that are more user-friendly. Also different guardrails and precautions that should be taken to prevent potential prompt injection attacks.
